How does thermal work?
All physical things, including people, radiate infrared energy which can be detected by a thermal camera. Different surface temperatures are visualised and represented as different colours. The technology requires no natural or artificial light to identify and does not require physical contact with the target to read temperature.
This makes it an ideal technology for initial triage screening of people as they pass by the thermal camera at a distance. Elevated skin temperature that could be the result of a fever, will show up clearly as a contrasting colour on the phone display.

Fixed Solutions
Fixed screening includes the use of thermographic imaging cameras mounted to a tripod to measure the temperature of humans entering an area.
Designed for the detection of skin-surface temperatures so as to achieve rapid and safe preliminary screening in public areas with high efficiency and capable of multiple screenings at the same time.
With advanced detectors and algorithms, our Temperature Screening Thermal Camera can detect elevated skin-surface temperatures in moving crowds and so can be used for rapid and preliminary temperature screening for office buildings, factories, stations, airports and other public places, with accuracy up to ±0.5°C. This can be improved if needed to ±0.3°C by the installation of a black box calibration unit.
When an elevated temperature has been detected, an alarm will sound and notification is sent through the software to the appropriate member of staff.
Standard installation is accurate 0.5°C which can be improved to 0.3°C by installing a black box calibration unit.
Portable screening

The Cat S60 Series Smartphones include an integrated FLIR thermal imaging system that is able to provide an effective role in triage screening for EST (elevated skin temperature). They are super simple to use - can be handheld or tripod mounted and set up in less than 10 minutes.

Screening for elevated skin temperature
The Cat S61 is effective as a first stage / adjunctive screening device to detect Elevated Skin Temperature (EST) at a distances up to the 2 metres / 6 feet and has been tested independently by the National Physical Laboratory. When using the cameras for EST detection, it is the relative temperature that is important and not the absolute temperature.
The relative temperature is the difference between two data points:
- normal skin temperature and
- the individual being screened
The Cat S61 is able to identify temperature differences of 0.1 Degrees Centigrade. Each time it is activated, the unique AI powered screening application stores the temperature data of up to 10 healthy faces. An ‘in the field’ calibration. This is always performed at the screening location and at a constant distance. The application has now calculated the average ‘normal’ skin temperature accounting for environmental factors.
The screening mode will alarm if another individual's face temperature is more than 2 C above this reference temperature. The app constantly makes adjustments to the healthy reference temperature
throughout the screening but adding healthy scans to the average.
Highest mobile hygiene resistance
All ruggedised CAT Phones are waterproof and built to withstand chemicals, bleaches and detergents. Users can fully submerge them regularly in soapy water and / or available sanitisers. They do not need a case – so there are no additional unnecessary gaps to store dirt and germs.
Please note: Temperature screening solutions do not guarantee to detect anyone with COVID-19. This is a temperature measurement and is designed to help assist businesses being able to open again in the most effective manner. When one of these cameras detects a high temperature they should be then assessed with a medical thermometer and appropriate steps taken.
